UPM Paper Group deepens the scientific knowledge on its merchandise’ climate impacts

A scientific report “Fossil carbon emission substitution and carbon storage results of wood-based merchandise” has been revealed right now by The Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) and the German Institut für Energie- und Umweltforschung Heidelberg (IFEU).

The report focuses on carbon storage in forest merchandise and averted fossil-based CO2 emissions when utilizing wood-based uncooked supplies to exchange non-renewable uncooked supplies. The report is a part of the scientific sequence of Reports of the Finnish Environment Institute and it was initiated and funded by UPM.

“So far, there was no science-based methodology to calculate all climate results of forest business in a coherent manner. This report contributes to growing such a technique,” Sami Lundgren, Vice President, UPM Responsibility says.

“The report exhibits clearly that forests and forest merchandise play a task in climate change mitigation. When assessing climate results, varied features ought to be thought of, together with sequestrating carbon in forests, storing carbon in wood-based merchandise, cascading use of wooden (e.g. recycling) and avoiding fossil-based greenhouse gasoline emissions via substituting fossil-based supplies and vitality,”

“Assessing climate results of forest merchandise is difficult. There are so some ways of utilizing wooden, variety of assumptions required, and plenty of uncertainties concerned. This report helps to know and overcome these challenges in follow,” Sampo Soimakallio, Head of Unit, Finnish Environment Institute says.

“Carbon footprint is turning into more and more essential for product labelling. On the different hand, the methodology for calculating it’s not at all times clearly outlined, though totally different worldwide requirements exist. The reliability of footprint knowledge can thus be questioned. This report places nice emphasis on methodological transparency,” Horst Fehrenbach, Head of Department, IFEU states.

The report gives some sensible pointers to evaluate the climate results each at product and firm degree. In addition, it sheds mild on the present limitations and assumptions of such assessments. UPM’s aim is to utilise the report back to develop its climate reporting methodology additional and to take into consideration varied features systematically.
