Hydro-seeding as defined by R&M Properties and Renovations LLC, is “the process of adding seed, fertilizer, tackifier, wood mulch and water in correct proportions into the tank of a Hydro-seeding machine.” There are a few other alternatives for more eco-friendly hydro-seeding approach. Instead of using tackifier, the component is called cellulose which consists of recycled paper blend ground into a pulp mixture. This mixture is biodegradable and can be added to established lawns for a thicker and healthier appearance or to new properties without previously installed sod. The greatest benefit of hydro-seeding includes limiting soil erosion and producing an efficient alternative to sod installation.
Each component of the hydro-seed mixture adds to the overall success of seed germination. For example, the mulch layer adheres to the seeds and soil while storing moisture. This advantageous environment creates room for the seeds to grow and produce healthy grass within two to three weeks. The best time for hydro-seed application is during the months of March through May.
There are different kinds of hydro-seed mixture as well. Centipede hydro-seeding actually takes more time to completely overtake a lawn and grows slower than Bermuda grass. Although, centipede has a decent record growing in less nutrient loaded soils and has a greater chance for surviving warm summer months. To completely cover an area, centipede may take two growing seasons to become well established. Centipede will appear brown and dormant during the winter months, but should grow healthy and green when given required amounts of water and fertilizer treatments.
Hydro-seeding is applied by a high-pressured hose attached to the spraying machine, which evenly distributes each element onto the landscape. After the hydro-seed mixture is applied, routine watering and mowing should be practiced. For the first few weeks, the lawn should be watered consistently three to four times a day for fifteen minutes, especially in warm weather. The grass can be mowed once blades reach approximately one to two inches high. Mowing one third of the blade will ensure healthy grass growth.
