Difference Between Bursting Factor And Bursting Strength Of A Paper

Packaging plays a significant role in all production verticals. Whether it is consumer goods or grocery goods, textile goods or industrial material, all needs to be sealed and packed safely and securely to deliver the goods from one place to another. To maintain the quality of the products, it is necessary to pack the products in a highly safe and durable material that can resist variations in pressure, temperatures and transportation discrepancies to deliver the goods safely to the customer’s doorstep without any kind of damage. There are a large number of factors that need to be measured thoroughly to analyze the strength and quality of the paper, corrugated boxes, multi-layered boxes that are used in packaging. The list of factors or parameters includes compressibility, hardness, tearing resistance, bursting factor, etc. These properties help to measure the endurance and strength of the packaging boxes.

Bursting Factor and Its Importance in Maintaining the Quality of Packaging Good

The bursting factor of a paper is calculated by dividing the bursting strength of paper by the weight of the paper. The result of the bursting factor is expressed in grams per sq. meter. On other hand, the bursting strength is the amount of pressure that the paper can bear easily before it ruptures. The burst strength varies as per the weight and the quality of the paper. Bursting strength of a paper can be calculated by applying sufficient amount of hydrostatic pressure which is required to rupture the paper which is used in manufacturing the corrugated boxes. The bursting strength of the material is usually printed in the corrugated boxes to offer the manufacturers an idea to fill the quantity of the product accordingly so that the box will not burst at the time of handling. This test can be performed easily with the help of a testing instrument “Bursting Strength Tester”.

Moreover, the structure of the paper helps to determine the strength of the paper. The quality of the fiber, its proportion, type, method of manufacturing and the use of additives and fillers determines the bursting strength of the paper. In case of corrugated boxes, the fluted or layered paper enhance the durability of the boxes. In addition to this, the cushioning effect improves the strength of the corrugated boxes.

Hence, bursting factor and bursting strength together are required to measure the quality and strength of packaging products.
