Natural-Vegetable Based

Bayberry

Bayberry, also known as Myrtle Wax or Candle Berry is a rare, expensive natural wax made from Bayberry shrubs. The wax is made by boiling berries from the shrubs. The wax then floats to the top and is collected and processed for making candles. Bayberry wax has a natural greenish color and a fresh scent to it. With a melt point of 118 degrees, this wax is very hard and brittle.

Candles that are made from Bayberry wax are most commonly known as the Christmas Candle. Tradition is, a candle made from Bayberry wax that is burnt all the way to the socket, will bring “food to the larder and gold to the pockets”.

BeesWax

Beeswax has its own unique fragrance to it. Used without fragrance, studies have shown that beeswax actually helps to purify the air. Beeswax can be naturally filtered which results in natural white or yellow beeswax. Naturally filtered beeswax is filtered without using chemicals. White beeswax is highly refined by the Dilco Refining process, a well trusted method of naturally filtering & bleaching the beeswax. Not all beeswax suppliers naturally filter their wax. It is important to know if your wax is chemically bleached. Beeswax has a melt point of approximately 146 degrees.

Pure beeswax is known to burn longer and cleaner with minimal dripping. Candles made from Beeswax are considered a very high quality, expensive candle.

Candelilla

Candelilla wax is a vegetable wax found in great quantities in Northwestern Mexico. Candelilla is extracted from the scrub called, Euphorbia Cerifera. Like Bayberry, the wax is made by boiling the shrub, and skimming off the resultant wax. The raw material is then refined to a light yellow color..

Carnauba

Carnauba is a vegetable wax grown only in Brazil and comes from the leaves of the Brazilian “tree of life”. Carnauba palm grows in the northern and northeastern part of Brazil where the soil is dark and fertile. Quality and color vary with the age of the leaves, with the younger leaves providing the prime yellow color, and the older leaves provide the darker color.

Palm

Palm Wax is 100% natural wax made from the oil of Palm Trees. It is a hard wax with a melt point of approximately 140 degrees. It usually comes in flake form. It can be used straight or as an additive to other natural or synthetic waxes. The natural characteristics of a candle made from palm wax is the beautiful crystal effect that it produces.

Soy

Gel

Granular Wax is a paraffin based particle wax. Used to make candle art just like sand art and is easy to use with children.

Jelly Candle Wax

Jelly Wax is a premade wax that comes in a tube. Like Granule wax, it is generally used for craft making with children.

Microcrystalline Wax Type I

Microcrystalline wax is used to help harden other candle waxes such as paraffin. Due to it’s durability, Microcrystalline is becoming a popular candle wax used by itself. Fragrance load within Microcrystalline is higher than most waxes due to it’s ability to bind with oil, which allow for a highly fragranced candle

NOTE: This is an additive most generally used to add rigidity to taper candles, help wax adhere to the walls of a container, and reduce or eliminate mottling in pillars. Mottling can be a beautiful visual effect for candles giving you a one of a kind finished product.

Paraffin

Paraffin Wax is a refined petroleum based product.

Paraffin Beeswax Blend

This Paraffin blend usually consists of 50 percent paraffin and 50 percent Beeswax.

Paraffin Soy Blend

As with the Pariffin Beeswax blend, Paraffin Soy is also blended with a 50 percent pariffin and 50 percent Soy.

How To Cut Waste On Office Stationery

The adaptation of the office to the digital world has been a much slower process than most technology experts envisioned. The “paperless office”, once the goal of many organizations, has finally been achieved for many but with some room left for improvement. Most of the cost savings by going paperless have not been fully realized. Costs of paper management have gone up in all areas:

– Purchase price

– Printing

– Storing

– Disposal

– Recycling

One area that offices can realize savings and to cut waste is in the use of office stationary: letters, proposals, legal documents and other uses. It is not always necessary, to print all documents on stationary. Some can be stored on an office computer’s hard drive. The printing and mailing of documents can be reduced through the use of e-mailing or in some cases, texting. If the office uses any forms, these can usually be converted to an online entry format. Proofreading an online copy of a document, viewing it on the screen, and making edits and changes, can save on the extra step and waste of printing a draft copy.

Technology such as printers and office copier use should be reviewed to make sure that wasteful printing and copying is not taking place. An office worker may attempt to get their printed material off the office printer or copier only to find that they cannot locate their documents. It is not uncommon for someone else to accidentally pick up the wrong documents, so the worker then simply prints out another set. To stop this many office copier/printers have features that allow the user to put in a secure personal code at the printer/copier station prior to printing. This procedure can save a lot of paper and costs. Scrap stationary can easily be used for memo pads or notes.

Finally, there is an environmental cost to the use of office stationary. Paper production and usage is destructive and is a large contributor towards pollution and the exhaustion of natural resources such as trees and other plants. Maintaining a stationary use policy may require consulting with technology providers to optimize the use of computers and printing peripheral devices. In high volume use of stationary, an office might consider outsourcing large print jobs to companies that have implemented paper saving and environmental initiatives. The general rule to better manage stationary waste is reuse, reduce and recycle.

Waste disposal management continues to be a rising challenge as population grows and along with the industrial development of countries. Centuries ago, people would have the trash from their homes transported and dumped in the places far away from the city of village. Today, instead of open dumping, usually the trash is collected and transported to landfills and then buried. Of course, over these hundreds of years, processes have certainly become more sophisticated. Instead of just burying the trash in landfills, we also use methods like plasma gasification, ocean dumping, incineration and recycling. Let’s take a look at a few of them.

Landfill

Amongst the many waste management methods, using a landfill is probably the most practiced in more areas of the world than any other method. Landfills are often old and abandoned quarries and mining areas. Considered the most cost-effective way of waste disposal, about 75% of the cost of implementation is attributable to the collection and transportation of waste from residential and businesses to the landfills. The waste is layered in thin spreads and then compacted, with a layer of clean earth covering the waste material before more layers are added over time.

Incineration

Incineration as a disposal method involves burning the trash. Sometimes this is simply referred to as thermal treatment, as a general category of high temperature treatment of trash material. This method can be used to transform waste into heat, gas, steam and ash. One of the advantages of incineration is that with this method, refuse volume can be reduced by half or more and it requires little usage of land. An incineration facility can be built in a small area to process huge amounts of waste. It definitely saves a lot of space compared with using a landfill only. This method is popular in countries like Japan where space is limited.

Recycling

Recycling of waste material means taking the materials and transforming them into new products. This is a key concept in the modern waste minimization philosophy. It’s about lessening the strain on the environment through minimizing the need to fully dispose (eg. by incineration and causing air pollution) of the waste generated and reducing the need to introduce new raw materials into the environment and then having to dispose of them later. In your everyday living, you may already be separating out paper products, aluminum soda cans or glass bottles into different waste containers so that these could be recycled. When bring your own shopping bag to the supermarket instead of using a new plastic bag, that’s another way of recycling.

Dumpsters

A dumpster is basically a garbage bin which is mainly used in industries, residences, construction sites and other public places.Dumpsters are used to stock-up waste materials which are then taken away by local trash trucks. These dumpsters are generally located on the grounds of schools, offices, hospitals, industrial areas, public parks, society buildings and often on the roads. The dumpsters are also used for the recycling of the waste, with some dumpsters recycling plastic, glass or paper. Most of the time, cranes are used to empty the garbage from the dumpster into the garbage trucks. Dumpster divingis very common in some parts of the world where a person dives into a dumpster to find articles to use from the trash that are worth money. This may include searching for plastic bags, pieces of metal or other waste material that can be still be used or recycled.

Sometimes people will even find something extremely valuable, but this is rare. You know what they say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Dumpsters come in different dimensions, from small scale dumpsters, medium scale dumpsters and large scale dumpsters. Small scale dumpsters are useful to place in a small area and their small size allows them to be easily moved from one place to other. It has the capacity to hold ten to fifteen cubic yards of junk material. These are very small sized trash bins and are typically located in residential areas and compounds of small business units. The medium sized dumpsters are the most popular. These accommodate twenty to thirty cubic yards of debris. These are equally suited for the residential and small scale business purposes. However a thirty yard open dumpster is suitable for the industrial and construction sites as well. Finally comes the large scale dumpsters which have the capacity of storing about forty yards of waste material. Now we can look at roll-off containers.

Roll-off containers

Roll-off dumpsters or sometimes referred to as Roll-off containers on the other hand are rectangular shaped containers which are carried on the back of a truck like a vehicle which stores the waste and transports it for the disposal of the same to the waste grounds. It is open on its top and has wheels which assist the rolling of the dumpster in the right place. Roll offs are generally used in construction sites for either demolition, or a construction or renovation process. The material is than loaded into the roll off until it is full, then the company which rented the unit would pick it up. In most places you need permission to use of roll-off containers unlike dumpsters which do not require any sort of permission. Whether it’s for industrial or for any other purpose, the use of dumpsters and roll-off containers has been very important to many industries.

Garbage is perhaps one of the most persistent environmental issues of the modern-day civilization. Biodegradable wastes turn into Compost; a superior quality fertilizer. On the contrary Non-Biodegradable waste does not decay or are of little use to the nature. The non-biodegradable wastes are those substances that do not decompose over time and remain as such in the environment. They are very persistent and cause various kinds of health and environmental problems.

Non-biodegradable waste make up about one-third of the solid waste produced all over the world. Proper disposal of Non-biodegradable substances is very important for an eco-friendly lifestyle. Five modes of non-biodegradable waste disposal are:

Sewage Treatment – It includes extracting the hazardous non bio degradable substances from the waste material from drains.

Landfill – The waste material is simply dumped under the ground however this leads to soil pollution. Landfills provide long-term storage for non-biodegradable waste. Usually, landfills are carefully situated to prevent contamination from entering the surrounding soil and water, and managed to reduce the unpleasant odor or pests.

Recycling – The non-biodegradable wastes safe enough are treated and some value materials are extracted for reuse by the process of recycling. Recycling is basically the process conversion of waste material into identical or other kind of usable item. Recycling non-biodegradable wastes greatly reduces the volume of hazardous waste that are usually deposited in landfills or burned in incinerator plants apart from saving the amount of virgin materials that must be manufactured or mined to make new products, saving considerable amount of energy and putting stain on the nature in the process.

Control Measures of Soil Pollution

The natural resource, soil, is the thin layer of organic and inorganic materials that covers the Earth’s rocky surface. Soil formation involves a large number of factors and is a time taking process. Mechanical weathering of rocks due to temperature changes, wind, moving water, lichens are a few of the contributing factors.

Pollutants like toxic compounds, radioactive materials, salts, chemicals, when added to the soil, deteriorate the quality, texture and mineral content of the soil. This leads to soil pollution. Soil pollutants disturb the biological balance of the organisms in the soil. The adverse effect of this contamination is reduced soil fertility affecting plant and animal growth.

Major causes of soil pollution are:

  • Random use of fertilizers
  • Random use of pesticides, insecticides and herbicides
  • Disposal of large quantities of solid waste
  • Deforestation and soil erosion
  • Addition of industrial contaminants
  • Dumping of radioactive wastes

Control of soil pollution

Various steps suggested in order to control soil pollution are as follows:

Reducing chemical fertilizer and pesticide use:

As the soil erosion has become a major cause of concern we need to adopt the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle in order to minimize the usage of fertilizers and pesticides.

Biofertilizers are the best alternatives for chemical fertilizers. They are microorganisms which are used to increase the fertility and growth capacity of soil. This process of Biofertilization also reduces the need for pesticides and fungicides.

Practice of crop rotation – Leguminous plants can fix atmospheric nitrogen and hence enhance the soil fertility. These plants can be grown in between the crops which absorb a lot of soil nutrients.

Recycling of materials

Recycling and reusing of materials such as glass containers, plastic bags, paper, cloth etc. at domestic levels rather than disposing, reduces the solid waste pollution. Use of plastic bags has increased drastically. Paper bags or jute bags can be a good alternative for them. Toys made up of clay can be a good source of amusement for kids. A complete ban on the use of plastics is advisable.

Reforestation

Wastelands, soil erosion and floods can be controlled by reforestation. Huge forests have become prey to man’s greed. It takes years together to reform a forest. Every individual on earth should decide to plant trees to save our planet earth.

Treatment of waste

Biological treatment of the waste using anaerobic microorganisms, such as methanogens and acetogens is advisable as it helps to break down the soil wastes into a less toxic and biodegradable form. Industrial and radioactive wastes should be properly treated before leaving them to soil.

It is high time the man realizes the importance of the rich top soil and takes necessary steps to protect it from pollutants. Soil is an asset and there is no substitute for this. Wide stretches of desserts created by human beings are laughing at us. When we cannot create tanks and tanks of natural fertile soil should we not stop destroying it?

How to Promote Environmental Awareness

I maybe stating the obvious, but is an undeniable a fact that Mother Nature is no longer very healthy. As a species, we have contributed to this reality by not being aware of the consequences of our actions. We do not think. Through ignorance, we have almost irreparably damaged the environment. No longer have we a world that has a healthy Eco system.

Factors that contribute to damaging our fragile environment are too numerous to mention. A few include pollution from industry, exhaust fumes from motor vehicles, overuse of natural resources, loss of native vegetation, and a lack of recycling. We read of climate change. Rising sea levels and increases in global temperatures. Arable land has become a desert. Farmers lose their livelihood. People cannot eat. Independence has turned into dependence on aid agencies and charity.

Global charity organizations can only do so much to alleviate human suffering. There are never enough financial resources to help enhance their operations. Wealthy nations provide some degree of assistance, yet tend to spend more on the development of industry and infrastructure. Arms development and sales far outweigh Government based donations. It seems all is lost. Yet solutions exist if individuals and whole communities decide to create positive actions.

I am currently the resident of a small subdivision called Villa Park in the City of Davao: Philippines. A veritable tropical paradise one may think. This is not so. Everywhere I walk, I see litter that has been thrown on the ground by individuals who simply lack awareness of their actions. Cigarette butts, plastic bottles, plastic shopping bags, and plastic wrappings from snack foods. This is not a remarkable sight. This is pollution. This should not be a reality. I have often expressed frustration in relation to this issue, and have often wondered about what I can do to try to create positive change.

Just as I began to think that my thoughts were of no validity, something happened. I was talking to my neighbor the other day, and he told me that locals in my suburb want to do something to help their local environment. A few so far have initiated a recycling process that will reduce garbage and create income through the sale of glass, plastic, and scrap metal.I.E: empty food and drink canisters. We discussed in earnest the need for people to start composting by using vegetable scraps and lawn cuttings. With education, families can create a front yard fruit and vegetable garden. This will save money. This will provide a healthier diet. This will be an example of people creating positive change for the benefit of the environment.

Care for the environment is something that locals will have to learn about through educational processes at local schools, as well as community meetings. People will have to learn about separating biodegradable and non-biodegradable materials. Every week, folk are going to have to take their empty plastic bottles and metal cans along with used paper/ cardboard and place them in a designated container that will be located at one end of the community garden. A compost heap will be there as well. This will help to grow vegetables. This will lessen the amount of money that people have to spend on buying food. Money gained from the sale of glass and metal will help this project to expand: at the same time reinforcing the value of recycling.

In relation to the use of compost: This reduces the need for chemical based fertilizers to grow crops. This envisaged communal garden will become a green and healthy mini-Eco system. This will provide a physical example of how the environment can be improved and restored. There is no need to sit and wait for others to provide solutions. People can work together now; not some other future date.

As a social initiative, this will get people communicating and cooperating with each other on a higher degree. Those in this sub division who live in utter poverty will be able to share what is being grown. This will help to create a healthier diet for themselves and their families. They will learn how to grow their own vegetables. This is self-empowerment. This is social change.

People also have to learn that throwing litter on the ground is unhealthy and unsightly. They have to realize that littering is a direct link to degradation of the environment. Government officials have to be pushed to have rubbish bins placed in more areas. This would at least help to encourage individuals to dispose of their personal litter in a correct fashion. It is interesting to note that recycling and proper disposal of litter and trash in Davao City is compulsory by law. Yet at present, I do no not see many actually conforming to this decree: at the risk of custodial and financial penalties.

There is much be done, so to preserve and protect the environment. This article has described one small project that is an initiative of ordinary people. People that want to create positive change by making their locality a healthier place to live in. When this community project is promoted via the media and public meetings, other communities throughout the entire nation of the Philippines may be inspired to do the same thing. Yet this need for protection and restoration of the planet’s environment is a global issue. Can humanity face and conquer this challenge? We no longer possess the luxury of time.

When waste is managed properly, the environment is preserved. Water bodies such as lakes and rivers are protected from toxic materials, while the ozone layer is protected from air pollutants that result from burning hazardous waste products.
