Valmet to deliver new evaporation line to Södra Cell Mönsterås pulp mill in Sweden


Valmet will deliver a new evaporation line 3 for Södra Cell Mönsterås pulp mill in Sweden. The new line will replace the oldest evaporation line 1 at the mill. The new evaporation plant is scheduled to start-up in the 1Q 2023.

The value of the order will not be disclosed. However, a project of this size and scope is typically valued at around Euro 30 million.

“Our existing evaporation line 1 is over 40 years old and due to high recurring maintenance costs it now needs to be replaced with a new modern evaporation plant representing the state-of-the-art technology, which is more energy efficient and increases our mill’s performance,” says Jonas Olander, Project Leader at Södra Cell Mönsterås.

The new evaporation line 3 will have a capacity of 530 tonnes evaporated water per hour. The 7-effect line will feature Valmet Tubel technology for highest energy efficiency, availability and easy washing. The evaporation line will produce clean condensates for reuse in the mill processes. The line includes preparedness for lignin extraction with LignoBoost technology. Valmet’s delivery also includes inspection of the existing evaporation line 2.

Södra is Sweden’s largest forest owners’ association and an international forest industry group where operations are based on the processing of members forest raw material.

Södra Cell is one of Södra’s four business areas. With its pulp mills at Värö, Mörrum and Mönsterås, Södra Cell is one of the leading producers of market pulp in the world.

Siempelkamp received an order from Guararapes in Brazil


The Brazilian wood-based materials producer Guararapes Paineis, S/A. placed an order for an MDF plant with Siempelkamp.

The core component is a ContiRoll® Generation 9 for MDF in the 9′ x 48.7m format. The daily capacity of the plant is designed for 1,500 m3 and thus exceeds that of the first Siempelkamp plant, which was ordered in 2014 and started up in 2016, by 400 m3. The scope of supply for Guararapes includes all components from the debarking and chipper line to the packing line. Also included is the EcoResinator glue blending system for MDF, which convinces with high glue savings and low operating costs.

The expanded production range of the company, founded in 1984, will be supplied mainly to the domestic market, but also to export markets. Assembly in Caçador is scheduled to start in the 1Q 2022.

Valmet receives the third tissue line order from Aktül Kagit Üretim Pazarlama in Turkey


HELSINKI — Valmet will supply the third tissue production line including stock preparation, automation system and a Focus rewinder to Aktül Kagit Üretim Pazarlama A.S., Turkey. The new Advantage DCT 200 tissue line will be installed at the company’s mill in Pamukova, Sakarya Province in Turkey. The start-up is planned for the second quarter 2022.

The order is included in Valmet’s orders received of the first quarter 2021. The value of the order will not be disclosed.

Valmet has previously supplied two Advantage DCT 200TS tissue lines, started up in 2011 and 2016, to the same mill.

Valmet to supply IQ moisturizer to DS Smith Contoire-Hamel in France


Valmet will supply Valmet IQ Moisturizer system to DS Smith Contoire-Hamel in France. The new system will be installed on DS Smith Contoire-Hamel’s paper mill’s paper machine PM1. The target of the investment is to improve the moisture profile of the board for better corrugated performance. The delivery is scheduled by the middle of April 2021.

Valmet IQ Moisturizer (IQ Moisturizer) is the industry’s most advanced family of moisturizing systems. Valmet IQ Moisturizer combines staggered nozzle rows, patented nozzle technology and extremely precise electromechanical actuator which reflects to customer’s process as optimal performance, reliability and transparency. Nozzle pattern layout and nozzle design guarantee full coverage of the web with precision to correct even smaller scale moisture issues.

Together with high precision electromechanical actuator and Valmet cd-control, the improvement can be predicted, and control speed and accuracy optimized. The design of valve and nozzle flow channels combined with continuous actuator position feedback increase the reliability of the system and transparency to the operators.

The solution to be delivered to DS Smith Contoire-Hamel will comprise 44 actuators, 44 nozzles beams, 44 actuators cabinets, an air supply unit and a water supply unit.

DS Smith Contoire-Hamel is a French box plant part of DS Smith group, a leading provider of sustainable packaging solutions, paper products and recycling services worldwide. The Contoire-Hamel plant specialises in the manufacture of corrugated board packaging, mainly for the food industry.

Valmet supplies world’s first AI based machine vision system to Progroup in Germany


Valmet will deliver the world’s first artificial intelligence (AI) based Valmet IQ Web Inspection System (WIS) to Progroup’s paper machine PM2 in Eisenhüttendstadt, Germany. The new machine vision system targets to increase the containerboard machine speed even further.

At the core of the solution is the Valmet Industrial Internet (VII) providing the ability to combine data from multiple platforms in the mill and take web inspection analytics to a totally new level. Included in the delivery is a winder control package to take the fullest advantage of the new web inspection capabilities.

Progroup’s PM2’s last 24-hour world record of 1,751 m/min was set in 2019. During the record run, the 10.85-meter-wide PM2 produced corrugating medium at a basis weight of 80 g/m² with an overall efficiency of 94%, which was the seventh PM2 world record overall.

The Valmet IQ Web Inspection System (WIS) utilizes 8K cameras that provide new AI assisted information to help reduce the origins of web defects. The extensive Valmet IQ Web Monitoring System (WMS) with 53 cameras will enable fast and easy root cause analysis of web breaks. Full integration with the Valmet DNA Automation System coupled with Valmet Industrial Internet (VII) applications enables full use of available data to quickly guide users to specific quality or runnability problems and enable pre-emptive changes in machine operations to optimize machine efficiency and product quality.

Valmet will supply Valmet IQ Quality Control System and Valmet IQ Moisturizer to Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper Mill, JSC, in Novodvinsk, Russia. The new system will be installed on board machine BM1 to improve the overall quality of the cardboard and the cross-directional moisture profile, thus increasing productivity and profitability in operations. The delivery will take place in the 2Q 2021.

Valmet’s delivery for Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper Mill consists of Valmet IQ Quality Control System with scanner and related measurements and controls. With more accurate data available and new control technology, the machine can be controlled much better than before resulting in improved machine performance and end-product quality.

Andritz starts up complete LC pulping system at Papeleira Coreboard in Portugal


Andritz has successfully started up a complete continuous low-consistency (LC) pulping system at Papeleira Coreboard in Portugal. The new Andritz LC pulping system installed features several design upgrades:

– FibreSolve FSR pulper with advanced rotor design for efficient slushing at lowest fiber loss and highest availability.

– Advanced Andritz TrashTrap for reliable separation and removal of heavy and light rejects early in the process.

– State-of-the-art ragger which allows – in combination with the new pulper rotor design – superior forming, handling and removal of pulper rags.

The scope of supply also comprised a detrashing pump, FibreGuard detrasher, FibreWash Drum, cleaners and a RejectCompactor for further treatment of rejects. Andritz provided the basic engineering as well as the supervision of erection on site and start-up via remote support.

Papeleira Coreboard processes LOCC (Local Old Corrugated Containers) with a line capacity of 300 bdmt/d and a reject content of up to 10% to produce different types of coreboard.

Metsä Fibre and Eltel sign agreement to build power line for new bioproduct mill in Finland


Metsä Fibre and Eltel have signed an agreement to build a power line from the new bioproduct mill being constructed in Kemi to the Keminmaa substation via the Pajusaari-Isohaara-Keminmaa route. The new 110 kV power line will be about 15 kilometres long.

The bioproduct mill, which operates completely without fossil fuels, will produce 2.0 TWh of renewable electricity every year, equivalent to about 2.5% of Finland’s total electricity production. The mill will have an electricity self-sufficiency rate of 250%, and this will further strengthen Metsä Group’s position as a major electricity producer relying on renewable Finnish fuels. The new power line will transmit bioelectricity from the bioproduct mill to the national grid.

Metsä Fibre and Eltel co-operation in the Kemi bioproduct mill project has already started earlier with the planning of power line. Actual construction work will begin in spring 2021, with the contract being completed by summer 2022. The degree of Finnish origin of the contract is very high, 85%.

“We want to partner with the best professionals in every field to build a cutting-edge bioproduct mill in Kemi, Finland. We require our partners to commit to the goals of the project in terms of safety, schedules and quality. Eltel’s operations comply with all of these principles. Together, we will build a significant part of the mill complex – a new power line that will supply the bioelectricity produced at the mill to the national grid,” says Jari-Pekka Johansson, Project Director for the bioproduct mill at Metsä Fibre.

The agreement between Metsä Fibre and Eltel also includes dismantling the existing power line as well as modifying six transmission line towers in Kemi. The delivery also includes 110 kV underground cable works at Isohaara and Keminmaa substations.

Metsä Group’s Kemi bioproduct mill project is progressing according to plan, with earthmoving and pile driving currently being carried out at the mill site.

Totalling Euro 1.6 billion, the investment in Metsä Group’s Kemi bioproduct mill is the largest in the history of the Finnish forest industry. The mill will produce 1.5 million tonnes of softwood and hardwood pulp per year, as well as many other bioproducts.

ABB to deliver new Ability System 800xA drives and quality control solutions to Iggesund Paperboard in Sweden


Global technology company ABB is leading a major installation of new drives, control systems and quality control solutions (QCS) for Iggesund Paperboard in Sweden, driving increased safety, higher availability and more stable operations for the board mill.

ABB will deliver a comprehensive maintenance and upgrade project in several stages during 2021, with total supplier responsibility for Iggesund’s two board machines, which are part of one of the world’s most advanced, fully-integrated pulp and board mills. The machines produce premium quality board for consumer and customized luxury packaging, as well as safe, durable medical packaging.
